Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is included in Anvil's Conversion Manual?
A: The manual consists of 15 pages, and is organized into sections. The first section guides the builder through every step necessary for the conversion. The second section contains optional 'upgrades' which, though not essential, give the finished product a much more authentic and attractive appearance, in addition to greater functionality. All drawings are fully dimensioned and are full-sized, allowing them to be used in template fashion, and for visual comparison with each part as it's being formed (note: a few of the smallest parts are drawn enlarged, but accurately to scale, for clarity). Each drawing corresponds to a section of detailed, step-by-step written instructions, explaining each process depicted in the drawing.
Q: How difficult is the project?
A: Most customers report that they find the project similar, in terms of difficulty and skill required, to assembling an average muzzle-loader kit, with the exception that some soldering is involved and simple parts must be made. Every effort has been made to simplify the procedures as much as possible, but a certain amount of skill and experience with tools is obviously necessary.
Q: I'm not a machinist. Should I try this?
A: Over the years, Anvil's customers have run the gamut, from professional machinists with elaborate shops to ordinary hobbyists with simple hand tools, with most being somewhere in the middle. The majority, in fact, have not been trained machinists. Our goal has been a conscious compromise between the two extremes: to provide the type of precision and format expected by professionals, while avoiding technical jargon and other esoteric elements which might needlessly complicate things for the average hobbyist. A few operations require, or are accomplished faster with, basic lathe and mill work, which can usually be performed by a local machine shop for a small fee. Most of the project, however, is hand work, and requires nothing more elaborate than files, a drill, and hand taps.
Q: Aside from Anvil's Conversion Manual, what do I need to get started?
A: You'll need a replica of the model 1851 Colt Navy percussion revolver. Any manufacturer's product will work, and, since you'll be totally rebuilding it and destroying much of the finish in the process, an unfinished kit is a good, affordable choice. A few other commonly-available parts and materials are required, all of which are listed and described in detail in our manual. In every case where a required item isn't commonly available in hardware stores, we've provided sources with addresses.
Q: Can I use these plans for converting models other than the '51 Navy?
A: We're asked this alot. The accurate answer is, well,...yes and no. While many customers have, in fact, adjusted our dimensions for the purpose of converting other models, we've found that the '51 Navy is the only replica which reliably contains sufficient metal in the cylinder to allow conversion. With other models, some individual specimens can be a problem. This is why we've chosen to focus strictly on the '51.
Q: Is it legal for me to do this?
A: We're not lawyers, so we aren't going to dispense legal advice. In our own discussions with the powers that be, we are assured that an individual can perform the procedures detailed in our manual without violating U.S. law. Issues beyond that, such as local or state laws, legal definitions, etc., should be clearly understood before the project is begun. If in doubt, we suggest you consult your local and/or federal authorities.
Q: What happens if I start this project and have questions?
A: We're proud of our manual, and the many finished conversions our customers have built around the world. We're also proud of our willingness to help you succeed in your project! In our manual, we think we've addressed most difficulties you might experience, but if you need advice along the way, just call us and we'll be happy to help.
Q: I bought your manual and noticed alot of disclaimers. What's that all about?
A: Due to the nature of our modern world, and because of the obvious fact that we have no control over the skill level, judgement, or actions of our customers, we've had to adopt certain policies regarding our manual. Basically, the information contained in our manual is offered 'as is', and we make no recommendations regarding specific uses you may choose to make of that information. We've found that the vast majority of our customers accept our position on this, and understand the necessity of it.
Q: What if my question wasn't answered here?
A: Email your question to us. We'll answer it, and, if it looks like one we'll be asked again, we'll add it to this page!
